Within the chronicles of their town of Siegen documents show that Johann-Jacob STAUF was already pursuing the trade as a red tanner since then subsequent generations also worked in this trade.
Eberhard STAUF, the founder of the glue factory, was first and foremost a tanner, when the Napoleonic Wars and the continental blockade stopped the import of animal hides from overseas,
Eberhard STAUF was forced to think outside the box and pursue a new source of income and chose to use sole leather, meat and fat waste from the tanneries which was also known glue stock. By using this by-waste he had the raw material needed to produce adhesives and built a glue factory in 1828 to process this waste from his tannery and others nearby.

With the commissioning of a new purpose factory and closure of the old one, the continuing development of STAUF as a company has been given them a firm foundation.
